Work-Life Balance – a Luxury Few Can Afford or a Necessity We Can’t Live Without?
The idea of work-life balance has become a frequent topic in public discussions, yet for many Poles it still feels like an unreachable ideal.
In a world where remote work blends with household duties and the line between office and living room grows increasingly blurred, one important question remains: do we really know how to rest?
What Is Work-Life Balance and Why Does It Matter?
It’s not just another empty slogan – it’s the key to a healthier, more sustainable life.
Work-life balance means being able to separate professional responsibilities from personal time – allowing space for rest, relationships, and personal passions.
In practice, however, this balance is difficult to achieve. Long working hours, constant performance pressure, and the expectation of being always available make the boundaries between work and personal life almost disappear.
According to the Polish Economic Institute, Poles work an average of 40.4 hours per week – about three hours more than the EU average.
Only 5% of employees work part-time, compared to 17% in the EU.
Just 13% of workers in Poland use remote work, while the European average is 23%.
All of this makes Poles the second most overworked nation in the EU.
The Consequences of Losing Balance
A lack of balance between professional and personal life can lead to serious mental health issues.
Chronic stress resulting from excessive workload and insufficient rest can cause burnout, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
People in this state often feel constantly tired, unable to relax, and overwhelmed.
Neglecting personal needs and relationships over time can deepen these problems, leading to isolation and a lower quality of life.
That’s why consciously maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential — it can improve overall well-being and life satisfaction.
Do Poles Feel Supported?
In 2023, Poland implemented the EU Work-Life Balance Directive, designed to improve conditions for employees.
Although this was a step in the right direction, many people still don’t make use of their rights, and workplace culture often does not encourage balance.
Despite these challenges, there are positive signals.
A 2024 survey found that around 68% of respondents feel supported in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, thanks largely to the growing popularity of hybrid work models.
How to Regain Control Over Your Life
Realizing that you don’t have to face difficult moments alone can bring immense relief.
Crisis, conflict, or sudden change — whether at work or in personal life — often come with feelings of helplessness and uncertainty about what to do next.
In such moments, the support of a neutral, experienced professional can be invaluable — someone who helps you step back, see the bigger picture, and plan effective solutions.
